I once heard that people come into your life for a season, a reason, or a lifetime, and that’s precisely how I determine where to shop.

I once heard that people come into your life for a season, a reason, or a lifetime, and that’s precisely how I determine where to shop.

Shopping for a season for me means updating my wardrobe with some trendy or of-the-moment pieces, so I turn to secondhand retailers (since fashion is always borrowing from the past) or sustainable brands. I know that trends may very well be over in a year or two so I appreciate having the leeway to experiment with fashion that thrifted and sustainably-made items allow, as they both come with a relatively small carbon footprint.

Shopping for a reason means for a special event or occasion, and that’s when I try renting or borrowing the item. There’s no need to waste precious resources (and money) on something I will only wear once.

I know that trends may very well be over in a year or two so I appreciate having the leeway to experiment with fashion that thrifted and sustainably-made items allow.

Shopping for a lifetime is reserved for the wardrobe staples that will remain classic for years to come, are exceptionally flattering, and are the best quality I can afford. I tend to look to luxury brands for these, but it can take me months, or even years, of research for me to pull the trigger on an item like this.

Of course, this buying method doesn’t always go as planned, but using this framework has really helped me create a wardrobe that makes me feel both stylish and environmentally responsible.

Monday

I love the super chic makeover the backpack got when it came back into style, but I admittedly haven’t owned one since it came from Jansport and was covered in keychains. Sustainable brand, Filbert, makes their bags from high-end vegan leather, allowing me to try the trend without committing to the larger carbon footprint real leather has.

Today’s Pieces:

Filbert Backpack
Pre-loved Blazer
Pre-loved Skirt
Frame Tee
Rag & Bone Boots

Tuesday

There are rare occasions that I deem necessary to buy real leather, and boots fall into that category. Unlike the faux alternative, real leather stretches and molds to the shape of your foot, which makes real leather boots so comfortable. I purchased these Rag & Bone boots last year based on the high quality standard the brand is known for, and because they have precisely my preferred heel height, toe point, and camel finish. Every month or so I clean, condition, and apply a protective spray in order to ensure a lengthy life with me.

Today’s Pieces:

Lack of Color Hat
Pre-loved Top and Pants
Handmade Balinese Bag
Rag & Bone Boots

Wednesday

I’m drawn to the structured, slightly 80’s silhouette of the long blazer trend but I’m not sure how long it will last. Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found this black, double breasted blazer at a vintage shop and it fit me like a glove!

Today’s Pieces:

Pre-loved Blazer
Re/Done jeans
Handmade Balinese Bag
Betsey Johnson Shoes

Thursday

Midi skirts are another trend that I absolutely adore on other people, but I worry that my 5’4” frame is too short to pull off. I found this olive green and black striped midi-skirt at a thrift store and was absolutely elated when I figured out the right shoes to wear with them: a nude heel to elongate my legs without cutting them off.

Today’s Pieces:

Pre-loved Sweater and Skirt
Filbert Backpack

Friday

During my twenties, I came to appreciate the magic of the shirt dress. It’s tailored enough for the office without being too constricting or stuffy, so I tend to allow myself to splurge when I find one I like because I know I’ll get a ton of use out of them. This black shirt dress from Frame makes me feel put together on even the most hectic mornings.

Today’s Pieces:

Frame Shirt Dress
Handmade Balinese Bag

Saturday

I purchased this printed pussy bow blouse from Mango while I was in college, long before I renounced fast fashion after starting my sustainable lifestyle journey. I remember being especially attracted to the print when I bought it, but it’s one of the few fast fashion items that has survived the multiple closet cleanses I’ve done since then due to its surprisingly high quality. I think it must have been part of a special collaboration because it’s 100% silk!

Today’s Pieces:

Mango Blouse
Vintage Levi’s Shorts
Lack of Color Hat
Handmade Balinese Bag

Sunday

Although I exercise and go hiking regularly, I don’t really enjoy buying workout gear, so when I do it needs to be able to take a beating and also last me a while. I was thrilled when the best quality activewear brand I discovered, Girlfriend Collective, is also a sustainable brand. They use recycled water bottles to make their sports bra and legging sets, and I’ve worn these countless times without any noticeable wear.

Today’s Pieces:

Girlfriend Collective Legging and Bra
J Brand Jacket
Michael Michael Kors Shoes
Filbert Backpack
