Our team has researched and tested dozens of bamboo bedsheets for the coolest, most durable, and affordable options. These are my top nine selections with notes on how I slept in each pair.
Bamboo is an exceptional plant. It’s fast-growing, forming dense forests with low water use and minimal reliance on pesticides and insecticides compared to many conventional fiber crops, such as cotton. A cotton alternative, bamboo-derived fabrics are less taxing on the earth and are also known for their breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and silky soft feel. While we love sleeping in all natural fabrics, bamboo is especially ideal for the hot sleepers among us.
However, it’s important to recognize that many bamboo-made fabrics have unfortunately undergone a tedious chemical or mechanical extraction process that results in a fabric that’s no longer “bamboo,” and, in the process, the environment and the workers creating the fibers take a toll. Just because it is bamboo doesn’t mean that it is sustainable or healthy for sleeping on.
When bamboo is responsibly sourced, thoughtfully manufactured, and supported by certifications such as OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and FSC® (more on that below), it is a lower-impact alternative that is safe and healthy for our skin. So we’ve done our research, and I’ve tested all of these brands, to share the best options.
After this review, I am now a huge fan of bamboo sheets! For those considering bamboo sheets, sateen weave is the common thread (so to speak). This is something to keep in mind when considering your sheet preference. A bamboo sheet will feel more like silk than cotton or linen. But they are wonderful for keeping the body cool and a great option for those who live in warmer climates. Also, for those who are looking for a sustainable silk alternative to elevate your bedding.
What are the benefits of bamboo sheets for hot sleepers?
Bamboo sheets are great for hot sleepers because of their breathability and moisture-wicking properties. The fibers used to make bamboo-derived fabrics can help pull sweat away from the body and allow for better airflow than other bedding materials, which may help you stay cooler and drier throughout the night. You might also find bamboo sheets to have a silky-soft feel and a lightweight drape that doesn’t trap as much heat.
How are bamboo sheets made?
So, how exactly does bamboo go from the thick plant stock that it is, into a silky sheet? There are 2 different processes depending on the desired fabric outcome:
Bamboo Viscose
Bamboo > Pulp > Chemical Bath > Liquid Cellulose > Fibers > Yarn > Finally…sheets.
To further explain this first path of turning bamboo into bamboo viscose specifically, bamboo manufacturers dissolve the bamboo pulp in a chemical bath, typically made from carbon disulfide or Sodium hydroxide. This turns it into a liquid. If these chemicals are not properly captured and recycled, they can cause pollution and pose worker safety risks. That liquid is pushed through tiny holes (like a cheese cloth) to create new fibers. Those fibers are spun into yarn and woven into sheets.
While this process has historically raised environmental concerns, not all bamboo viscose is created equal. Many manufacturers have invested in improved chemical recovery systems, wastewater treatment, and safer production practices. Certifications such as OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 can assure that the finished fabric has been tested for harmful substances.
Bamboo Lyocell
Bamboo > Pulp > Closed Loop Solvent > Fibers > Yarn > Sheets
The bamboo still becomes pulp in this process. However, instead of using the traditional viscose process, manufacturers dissolve the cellulose using a solvent system that is repeatedly recovered and reused in a closed-loop process. Many lyocell production systems recover and recycle more than 99% of the solvent, reducing waste and environmental emissions compared to conventional viscose manufacturing.
Because of this closed-loop approach, bamboo lyocell is often considered the more environmentally responsible option among bamboo textiles. While the lyocell process is generally associated with lower environmental impact, certifications and brand transparency offer the overall commitment to responsible manufacturing.
What are the relevant certifications?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned from researching bamboo bedding is that sustainability isn’t about the bamboo plant; it’s about the factory and process for how it’s made. A responsibly made bamboo lyocell sheet, for instance, can be one of the most sustainable bedding options available. While a poorly made bamboo viscose sheet may be little better than conventional rayon, despite starting with a highly sustainable plant.
When it comes to shopping for bamboo, the certifications listed below offer a roadmap for safe and responsibly made options:
- Tells you the finished fabric has been tested for harmful substances.
- The more intensive the skin contact, the stricter the human ecology requirements and laboratory tests
- Tells you the bamboo came from responsibly managed forests or plantations.
- Offers transparency into sourcing.
MADE SAFE (Made With Safe Ingredients™)
- Ensures that over 15,000 Banned / Restricted List items are not in the finished product.
- Screens for potentially harmful chemicals before the finished product is made.
Our criteria & methodology:
For this article, I tested 9 of the most sustainable and responsibly made bamboo sheet brands. I slept on each sheet for 2 nights to determine its moisture-wicking ability, softness, and how well I slept on it. Alongside, I looked at how well the sheets fit on my mattress, whether they had a storage bag, and whether the color matched my current bedding. As a hot sleeper, I also considered whether the sheets were moisture-wicking and cooling. Many of the sheets below are traditional sateen-finished bamboo, but a couple of sets had different textures and finishes that surprised me.
