Between naps and nighttime sleep, this is where they spend most of their time. Because of this, I can think of few places more precious and sacred.

Since moving into a new home this fall, Iโ€™ve delighted in curating my kidsโ€™ room. They share the space with side-by-side twin beds, and I love getting to hear their chatter in the morning and listening to them giggle themselves to sleep at bedtime. 

I love this part of mothering, and discovering brands that align with my parenting ethos feels like kismet. Piglet in Bed is one of those brands. They are the epitome of grounded, quiet comfort with a whimsical flair that is reminiscent of a nostalgic childhood.

Piglet in Bedโ€™s origin story

Piglet in Bed was founded by Jessica Hanley in rural West Sussex, UK. She launched the brand from her motherโ€™s garden shed, starting out with a small collection of linen bedding (duvet covers and pillowcases) in just a few colorways. When she started the brand back in 2017, Hanley’s aim was simple: to create beautiful, long-lasting pieces designed to be loved and enjoyed every day. โ€œFrom the very beginning, weโ€™ve believed in buying less and buying better โ€” because true quality is made to last,โ€ she noted in our correspondence.

After only about a year, the brandโ€™s initial success meant the business quickly outgrew the shed. The team behind Piglet began to expand, and in 2022, the brand broadened its product range beyond linen bedding, introducing a cotton-based bathroom textile collection โ€” towels and bath mats โ€” and since then, theyโ€™ve added kids bedding to their cotton offerings, which is what Iโ€™ve had the pleasure of reviewing.

I myself hail from English relatives and have roots in the Minnesota countryside. My motherโ€™s house, which is our family home, has embodied cottagecore long before it was trending. So it comes as no surprise that I was drawn to the brand after learning Piglet in Bedโ€™s origin story. All of their pieces embody practicality and comfort, and each of their collections is designed with longevity in mind โ€” timeless pieces made from natural, responsibly sourced materials that only get softer and better with time.

Fabric, feel, and safety certifications

When our twin duvets and pillowcases arrived, I immediately clocked the quality and noted that the weight of the fabric felt more like flannel than a lightweight percale (which I personally love and know will hold up under all of the bed-jumping and roughhousing that happens in our home).

As for the more formal certifications for their fabric, Pigletโ€™s cotton is sourced through the Better Cotton Initiative, and their linen is made from European Flaxยฎ certified fibers, grown in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. All of Pigletโ€™s bedding (including kids’ bedding) is OEKO-TEXยฎ STANDARD 100 certified, ensuring that every part โ€” from the fabric and thread to the labels and trims โ€” is free from harmful substances. And while their kids’ bedding is not organic cotton, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the next best certification I look for whenever Iโ€™m sourcing non-organic garments and textiles for my kids, and these certifications together offer peace of mind. (Iโ€™ll also note that the brand does use GOTS-certified organic cotton for some of their nightwear and towels.)

A bit more about the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and OEKO-TEXยฎ Standard 100:

  • BCI promotes more sustainable cotton farming by reducing harmful pesticides, improving water use, and supporting safer labor conditions and stronger farming communities. Bedding made with BCI cotton offers a more ethical, environmentally responsible alternative to conventional cotton.
  • OEKO-TEXยฎ Standard 100 ensures the finished fabric is independently tested for hundreds of harmful substances, providing essential safety for childrenโ€™s sensitive skin. With stricter limits for baby and kidsโ€™ products, OEKO-TEX guarantees bedding is free from irritants like formaldehyde, heavy metals, and phthalates.

While Iโ€™d love to see their cotton move toward an organic certification at some point, I also think itโ€™s important to honor progress and intention, and acknowledge the effort it takes for smaller companies to make these company-wide strides. Jessica shared that Piglet In Bed is โ€œalways learning, always improving, and while we know weโ€™re not perfect, weโ€™re committed to making thoughtful choices that move us towards a more sustainable future.โ€

Ethics and sustainability

Not only is Piglet in Bedโ€™s origin story quite quaint, but their business ethos and practices are personal, too. Most of their bedding (including the sets we tested) is crafted by a century-old, family-run mill in northern Portugal โ€” a partnership built on shared values and a deep respect for craftsmanship. Every stage of production, from dyeing and weaving to cutting and finishing, takes place on-site, giving Piglet complete oversight and ensuring exceptional quality.

For their seasonal pieces and homewares, Piglet has cultivated close relationships with their makers and suppliers by collaborating with small UK artisans, such as Wax Atelier, who craft beautiful candles in small batches from their London studio, and Chickpea, who handmake soft lambswool hot water bottles on the rural south coast of England.

According to Pigletโ€™s founder, all of their suppliers are committed to paying a living wage that aligns with the standards of the country in which they operate. This commitment is formally acknowledged during their onboarding process through a shared Code of Conduct, ensuring each supplier upholds their responsibility to provide fair wages to all workers involved in production. Additionally, all of their partner factories undergo annual third-party audits conducted by Sedex to ensure labor, safety, and environmental standards are consistently met.

Why we love Piglet in Bed

The bedding is cozy, well-made, with just the right amount of playfulness that will outlast any trends or interests my children might flirt with. Timeless patterns and versatile colorways are key to Pigletโ€™s designs, and as someone who is hoping to imbue our home with sustainable, thoughtful practices, Iโ€™m a fan!

When choosing what goes in their room, I aim to create a space that is calm and grounded, somewhere they feel safe and at ease to do their most important work โ€” play! โ€” and rest when the day is done. I do this by putting their things in order, keeping their room clean, and choosing products that are made safely and provide a sense of comfort. Piglet in Bed creates the sort of high quality products I want to give my children, filling their childhood with warmth and comfort they’ll remember.

This season of life often requires me to lie in bed with my children for a while before they drift off, which means I have personally spent time and slept under these duvets as well. Between snuggles, my mind wanders while I wait in the quiet for them to fall asleep. My vision gets fuzzy as I look at the glow-in-the-dark moon and stars sprinkled across their wall. I wonder about how best to hang their art. I mentally make post-bedtime to-do lists.

I think about how, eventually, when theyโ€™re too big for a twin bed, Iโ€™ll pack these duvets away as heirlooms, and Iโ€™ll offer them to them one day. Mostly, I try to bottle these fleeting moments, hoping theyโ€™ll remember them with as much love and warmth as I do.
