A treehouse in the middle of a city, The Roost boats comfort, creativity, and a unique dwelling experience for those visiting Greensboro, North Carolina. Constructed with only local or repurposed products (the side of the home is cork!), the 400-square-foot home was built by a group of friends in only five months. Even the stain on the 100-year-old reclaimed kitchen cabinets is made from vinegar, coffee, and steel wool. Experience downtown Greensboro, as well as the hiking and biking trails nearby.


3. The O2Haus

According to its builder, the home potentially produces more energy than it consumes. This bamboo treehouse is built 15 feet high in the trees of Fern Forest, so you can enjoy your morning cup of local coffee while observing the sights and sounds of the jungle. Each night you sleep in the treehouse, a donation is made via Cool Earth to protect four trees in Papua New Guinea, which helps save 3.5 tonnes of CO2 every night.

An affordable, eco-friendly dwelling for beach lovers and surf bums, the Modern Beach Container Home sits on the sand 15 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina. According to its owners, the small beach town was recently overcome with builders cutting down all of the trees for luxurious beach houses. In an effort to preserve the vegetation and provide an example of small space living, they built two container homes that are located two blocks from the ocean.
