Summary: After four years of growing our family, I was ready for a bedding refresh. Avocado’s foundational bedding basics provide luxurious comfort, contribute to a healthy sleep environment, and are all made from organic and natural materials that meet rigorous certifications. I found the brand’s bedding line to be the perfect blend of calm, cozy, and conscious.

Pros:

  • Avocado‘s beautiful, mindfully made bedding basics meet the ultimate standard of luxury and comfort.
  • I have peace of mind knowing that each item meets the highest standards in safety and sustainability, with the certifications to back it up.
  • The brand’s designs are minimal and color selection is limited which makes it easy to mix and match, with a polished overall look.

Cons:

  • While the price point is comparable with other options on the market, the higher-cost ticket items may be prohibitive for some.

Some of my earliest memories as a child are antique shopping with my mother, grandmother, and relatives. We’d spend days traveling to the best antique shops, Post-Its with measurements scribbled in pencil in their pockets. At lunch, we’d celebrate thrifted quilts and analyze which pieces might fit in what corner of each room. I distinctly remember visiting the homes of aunts and uncles in the summertime, finding the furniture rearranged differently each time. Making a home wasn’t just a necessity, it was a passion, a hobby, and a way to feel safe in the world.

“Making a home wasn’t just a necessity, it was a passion, a hobby, and a way to feel safe in the world.”

Space making is in my blood, and as someone who lives with anxiety, I’ve always treasured the value of creating a sanctuary. All of my design choices come back to wanting to feel calm, comforted, and grounded. I tend to stick to neutrals, nature-inspired color palettes, and minimal design, all while striving to consider safety and sustainability standards whenever possible. Because of these personal preferences, I’ve loved Avocado for years, and even purchased my very first mattress from them in 2020. So when I had the opportunity to review their bedding, I sincerely couldn’t say yes fast enough!

About Avocado

In 2016 the company was founded with the mission to make a non-toxic, sustainable, and affordable mattress. Since then, they’ve expanded their offerings to include bedding, pillows, furniture, and more. Avocado holds rigorous certifications such as GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE (which includes a screening for more than 6,500 harmful substances, including banned substances, toxic chemicals, pesticides, and dyes), GREENGUARD Gold, Responsible Wool Standard certified, are a certified B-Corporation, certified Vegan, Climate Neutral — and the list of their credentials goes on!

“In 2016 the company was founded with the mission to make a non-toxic, sustainable, and affordable mattress.”

I even had the chance recently to visit the Avocado offices and factory to see firsthand how their mattresses are made, how they divert waste from landfill, and hear from their CEO and team about their certification processes. When trying to choose brands that are creating conscious products, it can be difficult to discern who is really walking the walk when it comes to ethics, sustainability, and standards. After our visit, I had no doubt that Avocado was doing all three.

Here’s the Avocado bedding I tried:

A collection of folded organic bedding items, including a waterproof fitted protector, displayed on a textured surface in soft natural light.
Unpacking all of my bedding selections felt like Christmas morning! All packaging was minimal, recyclable, or reusable.

After making my selections with the Avocado team, everything arrived packaged in recyclable materials, reusable garment bags, and cloth ribbon that I’ll be repurposing for holiday gifting. Avocado keeps functionality and sustainability a top priority in every detail, and I appreciate that every element has a purpose. For my bedding refresh, here are the items that I tried:

Waterproof protectors for mattress and pillow

Pre-kids, we were able to skip the mattress and pillow protectors and get by. But now that I’ve invested in higher quality bedding and added two kids to our family, I knew these layers were now essential. Securing these was my first order of business since they would help us maintain our high-quality bedding, and make my life easier in the long run as well.

“While most water-resistant items contain a high level of PFAS, Avocado’s are made of two layers of organic cotton and one layer of thin, waterproof film that is derived from cornstarch.”

I selected the Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector and Waterproof Pillow Protectors (insert using protection in the bedroom joke here) to shield our base layers from inevitable spills, messes, and to protect our mattress and pillows from additional bacteria and dust mites. While most water-resistant items contain a high level of PFAS, Avocado’s are made of two layers of organic cotton and one layer of thin, waterproof film that is derived from cornstarch. Both of the pillow and mattress protectors are rigorously tested for PFAS and meet MADE SAFE non-toxic standards.

Bonus: Both are machine washable (a non-negotiable for me as a parent!) for periodic cleaning after many sleeps, the occasional mess, and the inevitable nights when I’ve washed my sheets but then ran out of steam before actually putting them on the bed. Oops!

Latex pillow and silk pillowcase

The Molded Latex Pillow paired with the Silk Pillowcase is the bedding upgrade I didn’t know I needed. The molded latex pillow is the pillow recommended for side-sleepers like me, and has just the right amount of give and support. After noticing frequent neck and shoulder discomfort over the last year, I’ve noticed a significant difference in my comfort level while making the switch from my previous pillow.

The Silk Pillowcase adds luxury to the whole experience (I feel like a princess?) and I’ve noticed I’m waking up with fewer flyaways and better hair days since sleeping on silk.

Organic cotton sheets and my new duvet

While I love a gorgeous white duvet (RIP to our previous white duvet, a casualty of sharpie stains and mysterious discoloration), I chose the Organic Linen Duvet Set in Olive to keep things neutral and kid-friendly, while also adding a pop of color. For our insert, I selected the Silk Duvet Insert, which is cozy, lightweight, and machine washable. This is what really sealed the deal for me, and I’m grateful for their knowledgeable team that helped me make custom selections that were right for our whole family!

This duo paired with the 400 thread count Organic Cotton Sheets was reminiscent of climbing between the sheets at an up-scale hotel. Cool, crisp, and lightweight, I chose the Natural color. Avocado offers a range of nature-inspired colors for both their duvet and sheet sets. If you’re undecided, bedding swatches are available for $3 each.

Weighted blanket, linen quilt + shams, and throw pillows

The hand-knit weighted blanket has become a beloved part of my daily self-care routine, and is now a comforting staple in our home. And, as expected, every detail is intentionally crafted with safety and the earth in mind. Each blanket is made with a recycled polyester or organic cotton cover, and is filled with polyester fill made from upcycled, ocean-bound plastic.

The Linen Quilt is the perfect medium-weight layer, whether as an added layer added to the foot of the bed or thrown over the back of the armchair in our living room. Matching Linen Shams are available as well, adding a cozy touch to our bed that ties it all together. I can envision a gorgeous bed set made up with just the quilt and shams — would be perfect for summertime!

Finally, we added two gorgeous Alpaca Throw Pillows, and will swap out the weighted blanket for the white quilt in the summer.

So, is Avocado’s bedding worth the upgrade?

A neatly made bed with several pillows and a thick knitted throw blanket. A bedside lamp sits on a white nightstand next to beige curtains. A frame hangs on the wall above the bed.

Many of us spend most of our lives in our homes, and it is no small thing to feel safe, comforted, and nurtured in it. Outfitting our home with items that are made to last, intentionally designed with the protection of people and the planet in mind, and add to a felt sense of peace and calm, is not only practical but spiritual.

I am grateful to brands like Avocado that marry comfort, conscientiousness, and quality. To me, that is the ultimate luxury.

So yes, if you are looking to invest in your bedding, I’d recommend Avocado without hesitation. 🐑
