Things To Note:
- Cost: There is a premium price tag on this mattress, but if it’s in your budget, the quality warrants the cost.
- Not Plush: If you prefer a plush mattress, Coyuchi’s Marin REM Mattress in plush may be a better fit.
I spent my childhood and early marriage sleeping on hand-me-down mattresses. My greatest mattress achievement came in 2016 when my husband and I got married and inherited a mattress that my great grandparents, grandparents, and parents had all slept on — it was finally our time to break in its sagging springs! We slept in it for four years, often finding that we had both wound up in the worn middle of the bed by morning.

I grew up with a family who took pride in using objects till their very end — and often repurposing them if they couldn’t be used for their intended purpose; like my dad using his old boxers as wheel-polishing rags. Though I wouldn’t go as far as my dad did with his old boxers, I’m so grateful to have had this general philosophy instilled in me at a young age, and that I can now make it my own.
I’ve paired this no-waste philosophy with my personal passion for the environment, sustainable practices, and non-toxic living.
“My bedroom — the most sacred place in my home — is now outfitted with natural materials and collected art. The only thing missing? A non-toxic, sustainably-made mattress.”
My bedroom — the most sacred place in my home — is now outfitted with natural materials and collected art. I’ve invested in pieces that are safe for my body and create a calming atmosphere. The only thing missing? A non-toxic, sustainably-made mattress.
When Coyuchi offered to send me their new Natural REM Mattress to try out, I immediately said yes. Coyuchi has been on my radar for years — I first learned of them for their gorgeous, 100% organic linen sheet sets — and I predicted that their 100% organic cotton, wool, and latex mattress would be an investment for my bedroom that would see many years to come.
A bit about Coyuchi
Coyuchi has been setting the standard for organic bedding and bath linens since their origins — before it was cool. 100% of their products are made of natural fibers, and 99% of their products are GOTS or GOLS certified. They have roots in the sleepy town of Point Reyes, California, which points to the feeling they evoke with their products; yes, I want to wrap up in materials inspired by the Pacific Ocean, lush coastal vegetation, and the windswept shore. Though Coyuchi has grown in reach since their founding in 1991, they still have the same high and better standards for their products — and they even still have their flagship store by the sea.

In 2017, they launched their 2nd Home™ Take Back program, which began their journey of never throwing away fabric, whether scraps, product returns, or defects. Instead, they responsibly recycle, renew products for resale, or repurpose fibers into brand-new Coyuchi pieces.
Their prioritization of regenerative practices and commitment to the environment makes it easy for me to trust their products and know what I’m sleeping on is safe for my body.
So, why the Natural REM Mattress?
Their new Natural REM Mattress is made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and wool and GOLS-certified organic latex. I love that it’s free from harmful chemicals, toxins, and dyes, which were definitely present in the IKEA, family “heirloom” and rental mattresses of my past.
“Though non-toxic materials were my top consideration in choosing a mattress, comfort was obviously a very close second.”
Though non-toxic materials were my top consideration in choosing a mattress, comfort was obviously a very close second. I was also looking for a mattress that would support my lower back, offer natural moisture-wicking because my husband sleeps hot, and would isolate motion when sleeping with a fidgety partner (both my husband and I move a lot in our sleep).
I can easily say that Coyuchi’s new mattress met these needs and more. More on that below!
Ordering, unboxing, and my first impressions of The Natural REM Mattress
Coyuchi made it easy to order the mattress from the start of the buying process. They offer complimentary unboxing and setup of the new mattress and removal of the old mattress through a third party called Load Up. As soon as my order was placed I received an email from Load Up to schedule the service on a date convenient for me. I didn’t use Load Up for the unboxing of my new mattress, but I did use them to take away my old mattress!
“They offer complimentary unboxing and setup of the new mattress and removal of the old mattress through a third party called Load Up.”
The Coyuchi mattress was delivered to my doorstep by UPS within 6 days of my order. It was in a heavy cardboard box and required two people to move it from the porch to the bedroom. The box was large, but small enough to maneuver a tight hallway and through standard doorways. The mattress was vacuum-sealed in plastic within the box. I was so surprised that the mattress could shrink down so small with thousands of coils making up its inside!

It took two people to unroll the mattress from the plastic film. Once it was completely unrolled, it lay flat on the ground, then I cut a line down the plastic to give the mattress some air to expand. It expanded within minutes! From there, my husband and I lifted the mattress from the floor to the bed to let it fully expand and decompress. There was a slight smell for the first couple of hours, but it was very faint and inoffensive. By the time I went to bed that night, there was no smell.

A major plus of the buying process is that Coyuchi offers a 100-night sleep trial, which ensures a full refund of the mattress within the first 100 days after purchase if you don’t love it. They handle the return process as well. There is a $150 restocking fee to consider. For those who are nervous about trying a new mattress, it’s such a relieving perk to have a sleep trial.
But I didn’t need it. I had a great sleep the first night I slept on it — and continue to!
Firmness and comfort
At the time of publication, I’ve slept on the mattress for 30 days. And I can feel the difference!
During my first week of sleep on the mattress, I noticed that it is firmer than my previous mattresses. It’s definitely not hard, but I would rank it as mid-firm. It is supportive in all of the areas my body needs it, while still giving me the feeling of sinking into bed each night; reminding me of Goldilocks from the classic children’s tale when she lies in little bear’s bed and finds that it is just right.
“It is supportive in all of the areas my body needs it, while still giving me the feeling of sinking into bed each night.”
Through this review, I realized that a firmer mattress — one that contours to my body — is what I’ve been needing all along. One of my recent mattresses was foam, and I’d wake up in the night with lower back pain. I started sleeping with a pillow under my knees to ensure my lower back was supported by the mattress. This initial issue caused more lower back pain in my day-to-day life, especially when I work long hours at my desk.

The Coyuchi Natural REM mattress naturally forms to my back without the extra help of a pillow. By day 30, I am no longer having daily back pain. I’m sure my issue isn’t completely solved (I’m hopeful and only time will tell), but it does seem my mattress was a major contributor!
Additionally, I’m a combination sleeper, meaning I sleep on my back, side, and belly. The firmness of the mattress is supportive of all my positions.

One month in — and my sleep is still deep
My sleep score has stayed high since my first night on the mattress. I sleep deep and I haven’t had any issues adjusting to the mattress. The only thing I’ve noticed is that the mattress has become comfier with time. Many mattress companies say that it can take weeks for a mattress to be broken in, and I’ve noticed that this is true for the Coyuchi mattress as well.

Motion isolation
I move around a lot in my sleep. My husband is the same way. I love that the mattress seems to isolate motion — keeping me from waking up my husband in the night with all my rolling, and vice versa!
Even when I jump into bed at night, I’ve noticed that the mattress doesn’t move or creak; there is no sound at all. This is due in part to the 2,400+ coils present in the mattress construction. They’re not the old creaky springs used in my hand-me-down mattress; they’re a combination of Nanocoils and steel comfort coils that deliver precise body contouring.

I’m a visual person, so I love that you can see what these layers look like on the mattress’s web page.

Design, size, and materials
As far as appearances go, the mattress is stunning. I actually wish I could sleep on it without sheets. The outside of the mattress is lined with a jacquard pattern in undyed cotton with the most adorable yarn buttons on top. The mattress is 11 inches thick and easily fits my standard-sized sheets.
“As far as appearances go, the mattress is stunning. I actually wish I could sleep on it without sheets.”
There are two layers of wool padding within the mattress, which are naturally moisture-wicking. My husband sleeps hot, so this is a major bonus for him. Wool is also a natural flame retardant, so there are no chemical flame retardants to be found in this mattress!
The layer of latex offers hypoallergenic support and is naturally resistant to mold and dust mites. Truly, all the materials in this bed are naturally hypoallergenic — a huge plus for my non-toxic sleep goals!

My final verdict
I spend up to 12 hours a day in my bed, whether I’m sleeping, reading, or having fun with my partner. 😉 My priority when I get into bed is to feel at ease, safe, and cozy. One of my only downsides to the Coyuchi mattress is the price point. A queen mattress goes for $2,400. This is definitely on the higher end as compared to other organic mattresses on the market.
Though the cost of this mattress is high, I think the quality warrants the price — it’s worth the investment if you have the budget for it. It’s turned my bedroom into a non-toxic sleep sanctuary, has relieved my lower back pain, and has kept my sleep deep.

I’m no longer worrying about the materials I’m sleeping on, who slept on my mattress before me, or if I’m going to wake up with a body ache. I’m just getting really good sleep.
