Our editors have worn and loved sustainable fabrics for years — these are our favorite brands for pieces made of Tencel that are breathable, comfy, and come in a variety of sizes.

Tencel is one of sustainable shopping’s superstar materials. If you’ve already tried it, you’ll know why. Tencel is known for its touchable texture and flattering drape, which makes it as versatile as traditional synthetic fibers, but without the environmental cost. Need to refresh your basics? These Tencel pieces have timeless silhouettes made of a durable fabric that will last a long time, too.

Why consider Tencel?

Let’s start with an intro to this soft, sustainable material. TENCEL™ is a brand name for lyocell and modal fibers, and “Tencel” refers to what the fashion industry calls “regenerated cellulose fibers,” which are similar to rayon and viscose. All of these materials are derived from wood pulp. Tencel fibers are generally made by dissolving the wood pulp in a solvent and then forming fiber by pushing it through an extruder. Depending on the manufacturer, this process can be sustainable and good for both humans and the planet.

TENCEL™ is made using recycled wood and wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. Using a more eco-conscious solvent process, the resulting material is designed to biodegrade at the end of its life cycle. The production process is more energy efficient than other cellulose manufacturing practices, though it is important to note that only the trademarked material is a guarantee for these sustainable production practices. “TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fiber production processes are continuously refined to maximize resource efficiency and minimize environmental impact,” the brand name website says. “Carbon emissions and water consumption of TENCEL™ fibers are at least 50% lower compared to generic lyocell and modal fibers.”

Tencel is loved in the fashion world for outstanding softness, a resistance to wrinkling, and a beautiful drape. Superior breathability make it an ideal summer staple (and a favorite bedsheet for hot sleepers!), and the material is also naturally moisture-wicking without the need for additional harmful PFAS treatments. Plus, cleaning and caring for the material is as easy as tossing it in the washing machine, and simply hang drying or laying flat for an ironed, pristine finish. (Or toss in the dryer on low if you don’t mind a little lived-in look!)
