Our editors have traveled the world with sustainable luggage — these are our favorite brands offering kids luggage that’s thoughtfully made to make your next family trip safe and easy.

After years of diaper changes and feedings, there comes a time when your little dependent becomes more independent. During travel, kids’ luggage gives your mini me the opportunity to tote around their prized possessions — whether you’re visiting Grandma for an overnight stay down the street or across the country for a weeklong trip. As with any purchase, especially one involving your kids, choosing sustainable and nontoxic materials (and avoiding particularly harmful chemicals like phthalates) is best for your family’s health and the environment.

Why shop sustainable luggage for your little ones?

“Sustainable” often refers to long-lasting products that can withstand airplane travel and maneuvering by growing kiddos. Finding products made with high-quality materials are typically more durable and designed with thoughtful elements (think a lightweight design, smooth-riding wheels, and extra compartments). These might cost more than some competitors, but it’s well worth the investment knowing your kids will use this luggage for years — and even get passed down to younger siblings.

Not to mention, sustainable and nontoxic kids luggage usually comes with the added reassurance that you’re supporting fair production practices and staying away from harmful chemicals that pose risks to both your health and the environment.

What should you consider when shopping for kids’ luggage?

The reality is, kids don’t love (or use) everything you buy them. To ensure you’re making the best possible purchase, we reviewed the following criteria and factored it into our list of the best kids’ luggage pieces.

  • Size and weight: For kids, it’s always best to stick with luggage that’s compact and lightweight enough to comfortably carry (or ride on!) during those long treks through the airport.
  • Maneuverability: You’ll notice our picks with wheels all come with four 360-degree spinner wheels, making it a smooth and manageable ride—even for toddlers.
  • Ease of cleaning: Wipeable surfaces make hard-sided cases a must for some, while others appreciate 100 percent machine-washable pieces of luggage.
  • Materials: Most of these products are made with Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), a nontoxic, FDA-certified plastic. For all textile-related materials, we also sought out products that were OEKO-TEX certified.
  • Adaptability: There are so many kids’ products with short lifespans that ultimately end up getting donated, sold, or tossed. That’s why it’s great to have luggage pieces that can adapt and grow with your child into adulthood.

We also rounded out our kids’ luggage checklist by reviewing the certifications these companies and their products have earned. Some to consider include:

  • Global Recycled Standard (GRS): Monitoring the production process, this certification means recycled materials used are both authentic and traceable.
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: This one tests fabrics for harmful chemicals and confirms the product is safe for you and your kids to use.
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): GOTS follows the entire cycle of organic fibers, from sourcing the material to labeling the finished product.
  • Fair Trade Certified: This certification is given to businesses who meet their rigorous workplace safety standards.
  • B Corp: A global nonprofit certifying companies that “meet verified social, environmental, and governance standards.”

Our criteria:

Our editors have traveled with and researched the top sustainable luggage brands for years. For this list, we’ve chosen our favorite kids luggage brands and suitcases that are thoughtfully made, built to last, and designed with both kids and parents in mind. We often revisit this guide to add new picks when they meet the criteria below.

  • SUSTAINABLE/ECO-FRIENDLY | Made with recycled, natural, or responsibly sourced materials, these luggage options help reduce waste and environmental impact while supporting ethical production practices.
  • NONTOXIC | We prioritize brands that avoid harmful chemicals like phthalates, PFAS, and VOCs, ensuring safer materials for kids and families.
  • DURABLE & TRAVEL-FRIENDLY | These suitcases are lightweight, easy to maneuver, and built to withstand years of travel — from quick weekend trips to long adventures.

If the entire family needs more sustainable travel picks, we’ve covered the best eco-friendly luggage and backpacks. Plus, make sure to fill your little one’s new suitcase with our favorite organic kids’ clothes.

1. Stokke

Eco friendly packaging
OEKO-TEX® certified
Warranty offered

Best For | Long-haul flights
Sustainable materials | ABS plastic
Features | Carry-on compatible, Includes portable mattress, Customizable with stickers
Prices starting at | $249

Stokke is known for supplying all sorts of baby and kids’ products, from high chairs to cribs. But one of their most innovative products is the JetKids BedBox. The carry-on-size design makes it a compact choice, and there’s hidden benefits that make it a three-in-one luggage item: Your kid can store their favorite toys, pull out the “mattress” located inside the rolling bag, and even ride on it. The included mattress is a must for many parents, who find that their kids can’t get comfortable on long flights. With a deep understanding of little ones, it also comes with two sheets of decorative stickers, which they can add onto their luggage pre- or mid-travel.

This product is recommended for kids 2-7, and its most notable material is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), a nontoxic, FDA-certified plastic. The brand also says they use OEKO-TEX certified textiles for their bedding and mattresses.

Customer Review | “We recently travelled with our 2-year-old and 7-month-old on a family holiday, and the JetKids made such a difference to our journey. Our toddler absolutely loved using it as a ride-on through the airport – it kept him entertained during wait times and made moving through the airport so much easier for us … On the plane, the bed function was the biggest win.” – Doncaster (Read more reviews.)

2. Itzy Ritzy

Family owned
Third party tested
Woman owned

Best For | Ease of use
Sustainable materials | ABS plastic
Features | Carry-on compatible, spinner wheels, two storage compartments
Prices starting at | $120

The Itzy Ritzy Explorer is a toddler-friendly suitcase with 360-degree spinner wheels and a hard shell-style suitcase (aka the easiest option to clean). Like an adult suitcase, you’ll find two main compartments, including one zippered area to secure any toys or clothing that might move around during the flight. Similar to the Stokke BedBox, it’s also made with the nontoxic ABS plastic, and the brand ascertains that all of their products are free from lead and phthalates.

We’re also big fans of the on-trend “Check Yes” checkered pattern, but if you want another colorway, it’s also available in this sweet Strawberries & Cream option. These are only a couple of examples of the diaper bags, packing cubes, and more Itzy Ritzy products that make parenting simpler (and significantly more chic).

Customer Review | “My son just turned two and needed his own suitcase to bring on our trips. I have been researching and comparing different brands but I am so happy I went with this one from Itzy Ritzy! I’ve loved their pieces for a while and appreciate that the products are both stylish and functional.” – Ari (Read more reviews.)

3. CALPAK

Budget friendly
Family owned
Warranty offered

Best For | Growing with your child
Sustainable materials | Polycarbonate shell
Features | Designed for adults, spinner wheels, multiple colorways
Prices starting at | $185

CALPAK is our editors’ go-to source for soft-sided carry-ons, but their Hue Mini is a must for littles. Though it’s technically designed for adults taking a short weekend trip, we’d argue it’s the perfect size for a child — and reviewers agree. A number of five-star reviews come from parents and grandparents who nabbed one for their kids, particularly because of the size (16″ x 14″ x 9″) and vibrant color options like lavender, mauve, and French blue.

The company’s hard shell luggage is made with a durable 100 percent polycarbonate, which makes it more long-lasting than others on the market. Plus, the minimalist design makes it a rare kids’ luggage item children can use well into adulthood. Later on, you can build their collection with a matching carry-on in a slightly bigger size, or the medium or large luggage within the same collection.

Customer Review | “I bought the poppy color for my 8 year old daughter and it is perfect for her. I’d also like to get one for my son but I wish they had royal blue or bright green for him. It’s very easy for a child to maneuver through an airport and onto escalators. We packed clothes and shoes for a weeklong trip to the beach.” – Tiffany C. (Read more reviews.)

4. Konges Sløjd

Budget friendly
GOTS certified
OEKO-TEX® certified

Best For | European-influenced design
Sustainable materials | ABS plastic

For the cherry on top of a smooth trip, consider purchasing the Cherry Travel Suitcase from Konges Sløjd. The Copenhagen-born brand brings Scandinavian style into the kids’ luggage space. This one boasts many of the same benefits as other options featured on our list, such as the durable ABS plastic, four 360-degree spinner wheels, and an adorable cherry pattern (we also love the lemon version).

At $165, it also ranks among the most affordable, plus it’s designed to last and can work for traveling adults, too. The double-compartment luggage has a convenient zipped mesh pocket as well. Aside from their travel accessories, the European brand is well-known for their on-trend clothing, which has earned GOTS and OEKO-TEX certifications, among others.
