We’ve spent years researching and testing the best nontoxic mattresses and beds for ourselves and our families. Here are our picks for Montessori beds made from natural, organic materials.
As a parent, you’re in near-constant conversations about the many methods and philosophies telling you the “right” way to raise your child. And while there’s no one-size-fits-all recipe, parents have spent more than a century recommending one in particular: Montessori.
Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first female physician, founded this educational philosophy. “Montessori education focuses on the whole child, fostering rigorous, self-motivated growth in all areas of development—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical,” according to the American Montessori Society website. With these principles in mind, Montessori beds are designed to be low to the ground and easy for toddlers to climb in and out of independently.
We searched high and low for these low-profile beds, poring over hundreds of five-star reviews about the best Montessori beds. We also made sure these pieces were made with nontoxic materials like solid wood and VOC-free finishes to reduce your family’s exposure to harsh chemicals. Below, discover why they’re so beloved (and how to choose the best one for your little one).
What should you look for in a Montessori bed?
Beyond choosing a bed frame that sits flush with the floor, we found several “nice-to-haves” and important certifications to consider when shopping. These include:
Functionality: Some of our favorite Montessori-style beds make it easy to get on and off, even as a growing toddler. Others have developed modular designs, so you can convert them into daybeds or traditional twin- or full-size beds as your little one grows.
Age-appropriate transition: Toddlers typically move into a bed between 18 months and 3 years, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Some obvious signs include escaping or simply outgrowing the crib, but parents often need to decide the right moment for their child. If you move your child within the recommended age range, parents can feel more secure knowing a Montessori bed is designed to help toddlers climb in and out safely. That said, you’ll still need to childproof the room, and it’s best to use a baby monitor to keep an eye on your toddler overnight.
We also looked for several certifications. Many companies only use sustainably sourced wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC, and most products are Greenguard Gold certified, meaning they’ve been tested for more than 10,000 chemicals and 360 VOCs. For baby and toddler products, it’s also important to see if your favorite products have been third-party tested to meet or exceed standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to verify you’re providing your child with the safest, most health-conscious sleep environment.

1. Lumi Evo Kids Bed by Flexispot
Best For | Convertible bed with repurposable guardrails
Materials | Solid rubberwood, nontoxic water-based finish
Features | Converts to standard kids bed, removable guardrails that can be repurposed into a table, 1,100-pound weight capacity
Price starting at | $799 (HSA/FSA eligible)
Most Montessori beds are designed to grow with your child, but FlexiSpot’s Lumi Evo takes things a step further. The solid wood frame starts as a low-profile floor bed with protective guardrails, then converts into a standard twin XL bed using the included legs. Our favorite detail? Once your little one outgrows the rails, you can repurpose them into a matching wooden bench for their room! The bed also sits slightly off the floor to keep airflow between the mattress.
As for construction, the Lumi Evo is made from sustainably sourced solid rubberwood with a nontoxic, water-based finish, and the rounded corners and 15 wooden support slats add to its sturdy construction. We love that this bed is squeak- and shake-free (for jumping, ofc!), and it supports up to 1,100 pounds, making it especially practical for family cuddles and parents who often climb into bed for stories or nighttime soothing. With a simple, natural wood finish, it’s a versatile option for toddler bedrooms that will inevitably change over the years.
Editor Review | “Our Lumi bed arrived just in time for us to transition our daughter (also named Lumi!) to her first “big girl” bed. I love that it has smooth edges, guardrails, and sits directly on the floor since she’s still learning to navigate getting in and out of her own bed. Aesthetically, it’s gorgeous, and it’s going to be the perfect bed to transition with her over the years.” – Kayti, Senior Content Strategist
2. Nestig
Best For | Made-to-order toddler beds
Materials |FSC-certified solid Brazilian pine, nontoxic and VOC-free paint
Features |Easily converts to traditional twin bed, three colorways
Price starting at |$899
Nestig was founded in 2020 by two parents who wanted to create luxury children’s furniture and decor that meets rigorous safety and sustainability standards. It’s no surprise that many of the qualities our editors love about the Wave crib are available in toddler bed form. In fact, several parents who outgrow the crib often buy the Wave Kid bed. Made with an FSC-certified solid Brazilian pine frame with nontoxic glue and paint finishes, Nestig’s furniture provides peace of mind from birth through toddlerhood—and beyond, thanks to the versatile twin size. When you’re ready to elevate, attach the included longer legs to lift the frame off the ground. Three colorways match your vision: natural wood, walnut, or Grove (a neutral green hue).
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Nestig says it makes all products to order in a family-owned, low-waste factory in Brazil. This keeps their inventory low and requires longer processing times, but many parents think it’s well worth it.
Customer Review | “My little loves this bed! She went through a really tough separation anxiety/sleep regression phase at 18 months and we were really struggling until we got this bed. We were able to lay with her while she fell asleep, but she also felt independent with being the open side and the safety of the added twin bed rail. We had the Wave convertible crib before this and are in love with the quality of Nestig products.” – Unknown (Read more reviews.)

4. Simply Sori
Best For |Solid wood bed
Materials |Appalachian poplar
Features |Available in five mattress sizes, converts to daybed or standard bed
Price starting at |$1,085
Another small-but-mighty family business, Etsy seller Simply Sori was founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 2022 by parents Stephen and Erin Saenz. These Montessori beds have two unique features: they have a 5.0 overall rating on Etsy from dozens of happy customers, and they’re made from Appalachian poplar—meaning no glue, chemicals, or toxic materials. Simply Sori beds arrive with pre-drilled holes, and they recommend having a white rubber mallet and a drill to complete the assembly process. The railings are also removable, so you can convert it into a daybed, a bed with a headboard and footboard, or a bed with a footboard only.
