Things To Note:

  • Cost: There is a premium price tag on this mattress, but if it’s in your budget, the quality warrants the cost. 
  • Not Firm, Not Plush: If you’re looking for a solid firm bed or a super plush bed, you may want to go with the Serenade.
  • Buttons: My partner could occasionally feel the buttons through the sheets, but I could not. Worth pointing out!

Over the last year, I’ve been slowly gathering information on my ideal bed setup. My childhood and early adulthood were filled with hand-me-downs and IKEA mattresses. My budget was small, and my mattress choices reflected it. I also had the talent to sleep well on anything, anywhere! My partner and I went on a camping trip early in our marriage, and we slept on the ground without sleeping pads for a whole month — no issues!

As I’ve entered my thirties, my preferences have changed. I’ve become more particular about my sleep and notice when a mattress or pillow doesn’t feel quite right. My sleep quality is dependent on my mattress now, but luckily my budget has grown a bit, and I’m able to invest in a mattress that is not only comfortable, but is made with quality materials that are safe for my body and the environment.

Earlier this year I reviewed Coyuchi’s Natural REM Mattress! It was the first mattress that met all my qualifications and turned my bedroom into a sanctuary. It’s a firm mattress that has helped with my lower back pain, but I was left curious about how a plush mattress would feel on my body. A couple of months ago, I stayed at a boutique hotel that had a plush, yet supportive mattress that I adored sleeping in, and it got me wondering if a plusher mattress may be a good fit for me.

Plus, my bed frame was in severe need of an upgrade. I had been using a creaky metal bed frame that was loud and shifted slightly with any movement made while sleeping or otherwise.  

So, when Naturepedic offered to send us their Concerto mattress and Arienzo bed frame to test out, I accepted immediately! 

So, who are the people behind Naturepedic? 

Naturepedic was founded by an environmental engineer and grandfather who was crib mattress shopping for his grandchild and couldn’t find an option made without questionable chemicals, harmful waterproofing, or flame retardants. Thus, Naturepedic was formed — on a mission to make sleep safer for not only babies and children, but everyone!

They don’t use flame retardants or fiberglass in any of their products, and they’re EWG Verified®, certified MADE SAFE®, and GREENGUARD Gold certified. They use healthier materials like organic cotton and wool, GOTS-approved latex, FSC® controlled wood, plant-based PLA made from non-GMO sugarcane, and encased coils that they manufacture in-house from recycled steel.

Why the Naturepedic Concerto mattress and Arienzo bed frame? 

The Naturepedic Concerto mattress is a hybrid mattress that features a luxury pillowtop. It’s categorized as plush, but with deep support, which piqued my interest! I still wanted a mattress that was supportive of my lower back — I’ve had some minor pain in the last couple of years due to long hours at my desk — but offered a bit more of a fluffy feeling.

I also want a mattress made with safe materials. Naturepedic has an interactive feature on their website that shows what each layer of their mattress is made out of — the Concerto is made with organic cotton, organic wool, plant-based PLA quilt, organic latex, and glueless encased coils made from recycled American steel. No alarm bells here! 

The Arienzo bed frame looked to be the perfect pair to the Concerto mattress for its precision joinery made from solid FSC®-certified white oak, which would lend to an entire bed setup that is silent during movement and completely stable. I hoped this upgrade would bring a quieter, deeper sleep. I also loved the design of the Arienzo with its natural rattan inlay and built-in headboard and footboard. 

Ordering, unboxing, and my first impressions

The mattress and bed frame arrived at my door within a week of ordering. The mattress came in one box, and the bed frame came in three separate boxes. Whether you’re ordering just the mattress or both a mattress and a bed frame, note that lifting, unboxing, and setting up the bed is a two-person job! I ordered a king-size, so the boxes were pretty heavy. A third person would’ve made things easier.

My partner and I cleared out our room prior to starting setup to ensure there was enough space for building the bed frame. We built the bed frame first. It was pretty simple when following the included directions, and took us about 45 minutes total. You’ll need an electric drill to attach the slat system to the frame.

Once the frame was built, we rolled out the mattress! It came in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag. We simply cut it open and the mattress expanded within seconds. Super easy! 

There was a slight odor (it smelled like playdough to me) for the first several hours as the mattress aired out, but honestly it was super minimal and didn’t bother me at all. By the time I hopped into bed that night, I could hardly smell it. And knowing that it was from natural materials rather than any chemical treatments was comforting.

My first night on the mattress was an easy adjustment! I had no issue getting comfortable, falling asleep, or staying asleep. I immediately noticed that it was plusher than my Coyuchi Natural REM mattress, but still supportive.

My review of the Naturepedic Concerto mattress

I’ve had no issues sleeping on the Concerto! I’ve actually been looking forward to getting in bed more than normal because my creaky bed frame has been eliminated. My partner and I are fidgety sleepers, and the Concerto and Arienzo combination isolate motion well. Even my tossing and turning doesn’t cause movement or creaking. The Arienzo bed frame created a solid, quiet foundation for my sleep, and the mattress puts me to sleep easily.

The pillowtop on the Concerto really makes a difference. The mattress is still firm — supportive of my lower back — but the pillowtop adds just the slightest bit of cushion for coziness. I love the Coyuchi Natural REM mattress because it provides the support that I had been missing from my previous beds, but the Naturepedic Concerto offers the same support my lower back needs AND the pillowtop adds the sinking-in feeling I had been missing. 

I’m a combination sleeper, meaning I sleep on my back, side, and belly. The mattress is supportive of all my positions, but I’ve found that it has especially made side sleeping even better. Naturepedic ranks it for side sleepers on their website, and it definitely holds to this. It seems to relieve pressure points with the plush pillowtop. Many mattress companies say that it can take weeks for a mattress to be broken in, but I didn’t have any break-in period; I’ve slept just right from the day of installation!

I also love that the pillowtop is made of organic materials, specifically wool, which aids in temperature regulation and moisture-wicking. Wool is also a natural flame retardant! I live in the California desert, and the summers are extremely hot. So far, the mattress is keeping up with the hot mornings when the sun rises early and heats the house fast, whether I have the AC cranked or not. I’ve slept in just fine even as the sun is warming my room.

Under the pillowtop is a microcoil layer that adds a more dynamic feel to the bed as compared to memory foam. Microcoils help promote airflow, plus they’re more responsible and durable than memory foam. I honestly have a deep distaste for memory foam mattresses — I’ve never slept well on one — and can safely say the Concerto mattress actually achieves the perfect combination of soft and firm that memory foam mattresses claim to have. 

The only thing my partner noticed is that the buttons on the Concerto mattress can sometimes be felt while sleeping if you lay on them at just the right angle. I have not noticed this at all, but worth a mention!

As far as appearances go, the mattress is beautiful, and very similar to the Coyuchi with its yarn buttons. The king mattress is 13 inches thick. It fits my standard sheets, but you may want to consider deep-fitted sheets for easier on-and-off.

Is it worth it? 

My quest for a perfect mattress has come to a close. My Coyuchi Natural REM mattress will definitely be staying in our home for a long time for our guests to enjoy, but I’ll be keeping the Naturepedic Concerto in my own room. I love the feeling of a hybrid mattress, and I didn’t know the next best thing to a firm mattress would be one with a plush pillowtop. 

Plus, I don’t have any concerns about the safety of the Naturepedic mattress. It’s made with the best ingredients, and I trust it wholly! It ties with Coyuchi in my book.

The only qualification to the Concerto and Arienzo is the pricepoint. A queen mattress goes for $2,999 (regular price) and the queen bed frame goes for $3,199 (regular price). It’s on the higher end as compared to other organic mattresses on the market.

Though the cost of this mattress is high, I think the quality warrants the price — it’s worth the investment if you have the budget for it. It’s kept my bedroom a nontoxic sleep sanctuary and has supported my body in just the right way — not too firm, not too plush.
