We’ve researched and furnished our homes with sustainable furniture for years. These are our favorite wooden dressers made with responsibly sourced wood that are durable, beautiful, and certified nontoxic.
Dressers are one of those pieces of furniture that can last a lifetime once you find the right one. They’re an investment, but they can also be an heirloom piece that lasts generations. (How many of us know someone with the same dresser their parents — and maybe even their grandparents had? 🙋) But when it’s time to invest in your own wooden furniture, there are so many options to choose from: What kind of wood, what style, how big? And while for those questions, you ultimately have to decide what works best for your space, we can help you decide which dresser fits best for you in terms of sustainability, nontoxic and natural materials, and quality. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the best wooden dressers to organize your wardrobe for years to come.
Why choose a wooden dresser?
There are a number of reasons you might opt for a wooden dresser, from aesthetics to durability to the longevity they offer. Many of the pieces in this guide were built to last a lifetime, withstanding stains, wear and tear, and made with designs that outlive trends. Wooden dressers are also made from entirely natural materials, and the ones on this list are free from synthetic and engineered woods like medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which can offgas harmful chemicals like formaldehyde into your space.
What should you look for when shopping for wooden dressers?
When shopping for a wooden dresser, it’s important to consider the type of wood. Look for durable woods like oak, maple, or walnut (pine is okay too if you’re on a budget). Also consider the construction of the dresser — how are the drawers made, what kind of brackets are used, what are the joints like. Generally, you want to look for sturdy drawers made with solid joints instead of glue and nails.
In terms of shopping for sustainable wooden dressers that are good for you, your home, and the planet, it’s best to look at which certifications the furniture — and the companies — hold. Certifications help ensure that companies’ claims safety and sustainability claims are valid. Here are a few relevant certifications for wooden dressers:
- GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification ensures that your dresser went through thorough testing and meets high standards for low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and low chemical emissions into indoor air.
- FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifies that wood and paper products are coming from forests that are managed responsibly.
- Fair Trade:The Fair Trade certification verifies that workers receive fair wages and work in ethical and safe conditions, that materials are ethically-sourced, and that the supply chain process is transparent.
How to care for your wooden dresser:
Though it may vary from dresser to dresser — definitely check the specific care instructions for your particular dresser — a general rule of thumb for cleaning a wooden dresser is to use a soft cloth as needed to remove dust. Many of the dressers on this list recommend that you do not keep the dressers in highly humid or direct sunlight as well, depending on the type of wood. Walnut, for example, may darken over time when exposed to direct sunlight.
Some wooden dressers also benefit from oiling the wood over time. Boiled linseed oil is a great option for this. Or some brands — like Avocado — sell a specific oil for their products. If your dresser’s wood is getting dry and needs to be oiled, it’s best to look up the type of wood it’s made of and the brand’s recommendations before oiling.
Our criteria:
- Nontoxic & natural materials | The brands on this list use reclaimed or responsibly sourced wood. Many of the brands on this list are also FSC certified. They do not use MDF or other synthetic materials as a substitute for wood. Not only are these dressers made with natural materials, but they’re also free from VOCs, formaldehyde, and other harsh chemicals.
- Ethical | These brands prioritize fair labor practices, handmade and artisan craftsmanship, and sustainable practices that support local economies.
- Affordable | We’ve included brands that offer investment pieces that last a lifetime, as well as more budget-friendly options.
