10 Best Solid Wood Nightstands For A Nontoxic Bedroom
The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.
We’ve furnished our homes with sustainable furniture for years — these are our favorite wooden bedside tables and nightstands made with all natural, nontoxic materials.
It’s often the first thing you see when you wake up, and the last thing you see before you go to sleep. It provides you with essential support — and no, it’s not your partner. Or your phone. It’s your nightstand.
Don’t underestimate the power of an attractive, organized nightstand or bedside table to take your morning or evening routine to the next level. Having a clear space to set your water (or magnesium drink), headphones, charger, alarm clock, journal, and that novel you may or may not be reading is essential to keeping your routines routine-ing! If you don’t have a great bedside table situation, this is your sign to change that.
Why should you consider nontoxic furniture for your bedroom?
Whenever we look for new furniture, we try to shop second-hand first. But when that’s not an option, we look for furniture that’s crafted of solid wood whenever possible. Sustainably harvested solid wood is much gentler on the environment than engineered wood products (since they’re not made of synthetic materials), making them worth the higher price tag — especially when they’re handcrafted by artisans being paid a decent wage.
We’re also always keeping our eye out for third-party certifications that demonstrate a brand’s sustainability. When shopping for anything wood or paper, look for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) logo, which ensures responsible management of the forests used for timber. And other, more general certifications to search for when shopping for home goods include Climate Neutral, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD, and B Corp certs.
What should you consider when shopping for a wood bedside table?
When you’re picking out a wood bedside table, it helps to think about how it will look and how you’ll use it every day. Start with the material — solid wood options like oak or walnut tend to be sturdier and age beautifully, while engineered wood can be more affordable but may not last as long. Size is also key: Ideally, the table should sit about the same height as your mattress so everything you need is within easy reach. When it comes to storage, drawers are great for hiding clutter, while open shelving keeps things feeling light and accessible. Small details like smooth drawer movement and solid construction can make a big difference over time. And of course, choose a finish and style that works with your space, whether that’s warm and rustic or sleek and modern, so it feels like a natural fit in your bedroom.
Our criteria:
Our editors have researched, corresponded, and decorated their homes with the top sustainable furniture brands for over a decade. For this guide, we’ve chosen our favorite bedside tables that are made of natural, nontoxic materials, use safe manufacturing processes, and are crafted for durability so they’ll last for years to come. We’ve also tried to include affordable options that meet our standards. We regularly update this list to add new selections that meet the criteria outlined below.
- SUSTAINABLE | These nightstands are made with natural, recycled, and responsibly sourced materials, as evidenced by the certifications that each brand carries. These brands also use production processes that are safe for workers and the environment. That means these choices are extra durable, too.
- NONTOXIC | We’ve chosen nightstands that are made of safe materials and never treated with any harsh chemical finishes. All of the options on this list are free of VOCs and other chemicals that are unsafe for your indoor environment.
- AFFORDABLE | Furnishing a home is a big expense, so we’ve tried to include more affordable options for smaller budgets where possible — without ever compromising on quality.
