Is Naturepedic A Dream For Sensitive Sleepers? (Review)
Summary: As a hot sleeper with allergies, switching to Naturepedic’s Serenade Organic Hybrid Mattress with GOLS certified latex significantly improved my sleep. Naturepedic meets the highest standards for nontoxic, organic, and sustainable materials and production — so I know I’m sleeping safely and supporting a business with eco-friendly and ethical practices, too. For partners with different firmness needs, their customizable lines makes a great option.
Pros:
- Naturepedic’s GOLS certified organic latex is hypoallergenic, which is great for my allergies and sensitivity to smells.
- The organic latex also keeps me cool throughout the night thanks to its ventilation and breathability.
- The individually wrapped adhesive- and glue-free coils provide support and keep me from feeling my partner move around all night.
- The mattress not only feels plush, comfortable, and high quality — it is high quality, using only the safest materials and boasting a long list of certifications.
Cons:
- At $1999 for a queen, this mattress is pricier than mainstream options, but with its certifications, quality materials, and the longevity and durability of latex mattresses, it’s well worth the price point.
- The mattress is quite heavy — so find some help for bringing it in, unboxing it, and setting it up!
Over the last few months, I’ve been telling my fiancé that we should get a new mattress. I learned about all the harmful chemicals that mainstream mattresses omit, like volatile organic compounds (aka VOCs), which can pollute our indoor spaces — not to mention the other chemicals, flame retardants, and materials like heavy metals that can be found in nonorganic mattresses. Yikes, to say the least.
I was eager to get a new mattress that was organic and nontoxic because I wanted to be sure that our mattress was not only good for us and our health, but for the environment as well. Plus, I decided maybe it was finally time to get an “adult” mattress that wasn’t a cheap memory foam one from Amazon. So, when we moved into our new home this month, we decided it was finally time to make the switch!
“In my research, I found the hypoallergenic properties of latex mattresses are good for people who are sensitive to smells and have allergies.”
As someone who’s a hot sleeper, I started looking into mattresses with organic latex because it provides extra airflow, as opposed to the heat retention qualities of memory foam. I was also looking for one with organic, breathable materials like cotton and wool that wick away moisture and naturally keep you cool throughout the night.
In my research, I found the hypoallergenic properties of latex mattresses are good for people who are sensitive to smells and have allergies (aka me). (Who knew that organic latex would become one of my new interests!)
So, when I was asked to review the Serenade Organic Hybrid Mattress from Naturepedic, I jumped at the chance.
About Naturepedic
If you’re looking for a latex hybrid, the Serenade Organic Hybrid Mattress from Naturepedic is one of the healthiest options on the market. Naturepedic has been a leading brand in the natural, organic mattress space since 2003 with a lot of trust, awards, and certifications to back them up.
“Naturepedic has been a leading brand in the natural, organic mattress space since 2003 with a lot of trust, awards, and certifications to back them up.”
The brand’s mattresses (and its entire Ohio factory) are GOTS certified, which is the leading standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textiles. The mattresses also are made with GOLS certified latex, which means the latex contains more than 95% of certified organic raw material. Naturepedic also meets the standards of Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1, Made Safe, Greenguard, and more. This year, it was also the first mattress brand to meet the EWG VERIFIED Mattresses standard. Phew, that’s a lot of certifications.
And the family-owned business prioritizes sustainability through sourcing organic materials, avoiding toxic chemicals like flame retardants and formaldehyde, and staying away from adhesives and glue in any of its mattresses. Naturepedic is also 1% for the Planet certified, which means they donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes. Choosing the Serenade Organic Hybrid
The Serenade Mattress from Naturepedic is hand-built and the encased coils are made in-house without any adhesives or glue. It comes in Firm, Cushion-Firm, and Plush comfort levels of firmness — we chose Cushion-Firm since we tend to sleep on our backs and sides — and it’s designed with pressure point relief to ease any aches and pains. There’s free shipping, a 100-night trial with free returns, and a 25-year limited warranty, too, which makes placing an online order for the Serenade easy even for the risk-averse.

It’s worth mentioning that Naturepedic also offers three customizable mattresses — EOS Classic, EOS Pillowtop, and EOS Trilux — where you can choose from five levels of firmness on each side of the bed (for queen, king, and California king sizes). That way, you and your partner can each have a perfectly tailored firmness, no compromise needed.
Delivery and setup for my Serenade mattress
Mattresses from Naturepedic ship via FedEx Ground (again, always free!) and come roll-packed in a FSC certified box. My mattress came on a rainy day, so the box was a little damp and falling apart when my fiancé and I went to grab it from outside. Thankfully, the mattress was thoroughly wrapped in plastic so it didn’t get even a little bit damp. The box was extremely heavy, and since we live in an upper unit walk-up, I was grateful to have my fiancé and landlord who lives downstairs to help carry it up. Honestly, I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I lived alone. It’s very heavy, so take it from me and enlist help.
“Honestly, I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I lived alone. It’s very heavy, so take it from me and enlist help.”
Once inside, we got it into our bedroom and out of the box — definitely a two-person job. Like I mentioned before, the mattress was wrapped in many layers of plastic. (Fun fact: This is because it is compressed and roll-packed before shipping, which actually can help break in a mattress and help it lay on the bed more evenly, according to Naturepedic’s website.)
It took a little bit of patience and assistance to unroll the mattress, but once we got the wrap off, the mattress started to open up and flatten out on the bed. It had one more layer of protective covering, which we easily slipped off, and then the mattress was ready to go.
How it feels to sleep on the Serenade
After getting the mattress onto our bed frame, my fiancé and I plopped down synchronously, both immediately sighing in relief as we lied on the plush mattress. It’s bouncy, but not too bouncy — perfectly balanced and exactly what I’d hoped for when I chose the Cushion-Firm level of support. There was a slight smell after opening, but it went away very quickly, so I think it might have been from being in the plastic wrap.
“When I had a two-day migraine, it was fantastic to have a mattress that kept me cool and supported my head, neck, and back while I rested — especially because I feel extra sensitive to pressure, heat, and other stimuli during those times.”
That night, I crawled into bed and immediately felt the balanced support and comfortable plushiness. The mattress didn’t need to be broken in at all; it formed to my body while still feeling supportive. I fell asleep right away and woke feeling refreshed…I didn’t want to get up! It was cool, breathable, and supportive, just as I’d hoped it would be.
Since switching to Naturepedic, my sleep has been great (and my fiancé reported his sleep has improved too!). We both noticed the lack of motion transfer — feeling each other move in the middle of the night — and loved the luxury feel of it. And when I had a two-day migraine, it was fantastic to have a mattress that kept me cool and supported my head, neck, and back while I rested — especially because I feel extra sensitive to pressure, heat, and other stimuli during those times.
The only thing that could be improved on the mattress is the edge support. While the coils are actually engineered to provide edge support, It does give when you sit on the edge of the bed. I don’t particularly mind, but it’s worth noting if you’re looking for a mattress with a sturdier edge. That being said, it’s still quite sturdy overall and isn’t noticeable while we’re asleep.
Is Naturepedic’s Serenade mattress worth it?
It’s incredibly comfortable. It’s good for your health. It’s sustainable and gives back to causes that help the environment. And when you look at Naturepedic’s wealth of certifications, high-quality materials, and longstanding trust, it’s clear to me that this mattress is well worth the investment.
“It’s clear to me that this mattress is well worth the investment.”
My vastly improved sleep since buying it can certainly attest to that — as does the support it provided while I was stuck in bed with a migraine. So while $1999 for a queen mattress might be a bit on the pricier side, you can know that you’re paying for the quality and care that goes into these mattresses. And since it is a bit more expensive, it’s nice that you’re able to try it out to make sure it’s worth your investment. (Remember, Naturepedic offers a 100-night trial, free returns, and a 25-year warranty.)
As a hot sleeper, this is a perfect mattress option because of its certified organic latex, made from high-quality, breathable natural materials that help circulate airflow and keep you cool all night long. The natural latex also is a great choice if you’re a back sleeper, need a hypoallergenic choice, or want a mattress that will last a long time (latex is very durable). And if you and your partner have different mattress preferences, Naturepedic’s customizable options are a way for you to each cater to your mattress needs with an organic, nontoxic mattress.
Definitely be sure to note that it’s a multi-person job to carry in and set up the heavy mattress, but once it’s on your bed, you can feel the quality and durability from night one.
