We’ve spent years testing and decorating our family homes with nontoxic furniture. These are our favorite options for barrel swivel chairs that are sustainably made to last for your nursery or living space.

As you’re outfitting your home with the coziest, most sustainably made furniture and decor, you don’t want to cut corners. In fact, you want to pay close attention to each little nook. That’s where the best nontoxic barrel swivel chairs come in. With a curved back, these accent chairs will complete your space and envelop you like a warm hug — and allow you to rotate 360 degrees. Because they prioritize both comfort and style, they’re perfect for primary suites, living rooms, and nurseries.

Why should you consider nontoxic, sustainable furniture?

Movie nights, overnight guests, and everyday lounging all call for a focus on how these products are made. That’s why we pored over product descriptions and reviews to determine the most high-quality, nontoxic furniture items. As you’re browsing, make sure to avoid common toxins such as flame retardants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can affect your home’s air quality and impact your family’s health. Below, explore the relevant certifications we factored into our search:

  • GREENGUARD Gold: An elevated version of the UL GREENGUARD certification, GREENGUARD Gold assures your product is free from harmful toxins and chemicals.
  • FSC: Short for Forest Stewardship Council, this nonprofit provides a certification to confirm the company has sourced their wood from “responsibly managed forests.”
  • Fair Trade: Fair Trade is a certification for U.S.-based brands, and it was established to “protect the livelihoods of farmers, fishers, and other producer communities and the environment.”

Our criteria:

Our editors have lived with and researched the top sustainable furniture brands for over a decade. For this list, we’ve chosen our favorite barrel swivel chairs that are made with safe, sustainable materials that will last. We often revisit this guide to add new picks when they meet the criteria below.

  • NONTOXIC & ORGANIC  | Made with natural, organic, recycled, and responsibly sourced materials, these brands prioritize safe materials and avoid harmful chemicals. None of the options on this list contain flame retardants, and all are free from PFAS, VOCs, and fiberglass.
  • SUSTAINABLE | These barrel chairs are low-impact and better for both our indoor environment and our planet. We’ve prioritized brands with give-back initiatives, eco-conscious sourcing, and also chosen to include options that are built to last so you never have to repurchase.
  • DESIGN | The options on this list are thoughtfully designed not only for your comfort, but also to fit beautifully in your living space.

Swivel chairs are an accent to your overall furniture concept, and many of them are sourced from our favorite sustainable furniture brands. We’ve also curated guides for the best sustainable and nontoxic couches, coffee tables, and rugs to round out the room.

1. Quince

Budget friendly
Eco friendly packaging
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Size inclusive

Best For | Affordable barrel swivel chairs
Materials | Hardwood, faux mohair or performance velvet, high-density foam, recycled polyfiber
Price starting at | $550

Quince’s direct-to-consumer model has made shoppers’ lives so much easier (and much more affordable), and our own editors have raved about countless products across apparel, jewelry, bedding, and even supplements. By taking out costs in a traditional supply chain, like warehousing and storefronts, the company offers high-quality products at significantly lower prices. And while they’ve gone viral for things like $50 Mongolian cashmere sweaters, their furniture has garnered quite a fan section, too.

This swivel chair is upholstered in a faux mohair or performance velvet fabric, and the hardwood base is sourced from “responsibly managed forests,” according to the company. Users appreciate the wide and deep seat, and of course, the more approachable price point. Quince is also praised for their easy return process, but with this furniture piece, you’ll need to pay a 15% restocking fee for all returns and cancellations made more than 24 hours after placing your order.

2. Nestig

Small business

For parents and parents-to-be, Nestig has become a go-to source for the most luxurious nursery furniture and decor. Started by a mom, Nestig knows what parents want and need in their homes. Designing thoughtfully crafted products to grow with your child, they’ve created heirloom-quality pieces you’ll hold onto for years (if not, generations). They also rely on a low inventory strategy to keep their carbon footprint as low as possible.

Most widely known for their sustainably made Wave crib, the brand has recently unveiled a line of nursery chairs — including the Cosma, a swivel glider with components reminiscent of a classic barrel chair. While it’s not technically a barrel chair, its ergonomic form features similar curves. There are several types of upholstery options available, though we’re partial to the floral and gingham styles to add more charm (and comfort!) to your little one’s nursery. It’s made with solid Brazilian pine and eucalyptus wood, and a nontoxic, recyclable fill material.

3. Sundays

Natural materials
Plant trees
Warranty offered

Best For | Stain-resistant performance fabric
Materials | Plywood and MDF frame, 100% polyester, high-density foam, and feather-fiber fill

Sundays was started by four friends in Vancouver, Canada, who wanted laidback yet staple pieces to make a home both inviting and well-styled. They’ve achieved as much with their Round Trip Swivel Lounge Chair, which features a barrel-like design and is offered in two neutral colorways. The real magic in the Sundays upholstery is the company’s LiveLife line of performance fabrics, which are all stain-resistant (due to their PFAS-free stain repellent treatment), moisture-repellant, and nontoxic. Though upholstery options are limited, this is all part of the company’s curated collection to provide only the most essential furniture items.

As you’re shopping, you may want to consider purchasing one of their wooden dining tables as well. In partnership with One Tree Planted, Sundays plants one tree for every solid wood dining table sold.

4. Castlery

B corp
Budget friendly
Warranty offered

Best For | Outdoor options
Materials |Aluminum and wicker frame, 100% olefin fabric, foam, and fiber fill
Price starting at | $999

Castlery is another brand breaking the mold to create pieces that are high-quality, but won’t break the bank. Now a certified B Corp, the company prides itself on helping both their clients and the planet. To continue these efforts, they’ve even partnered with Maersk Eco Delivery, a service that replaces fossil fuels with “green fuels” (aka lower emissions) like green methanol.

If you want an extra cozy, textural lounging area in your backyard or patio, consider this best-selling woven chair. It’s upholstered with 100% olefin fabric, a material that’s 100% recyclable and requires no water or land in production. The cushion covers are removable, too, which makes it convenient for handwashing as needed. And with its relaxed design, the chair has received praise that it’s perfect for outdoor lounging. Use it to carve out a nook for reading alfresco, or order a set of two for a luxe conversation set.

Customer Review | “These swivel chairs are perfect for outdoor lounging. The woven texture looks high-end and blends beautifully with our patio. Cushions are thick, supportive, and weather-resistant. The included covers are a great bonus—easy to use and keep everything clean and dry. Comfortable, durable, and stylish—great value for the price!” – Yang P. (Read more reviews.)

With a 1970s-inspired design, this extra-deep lounger will soon become everyone’s favorite resting spot. Their recent collaboration with Pantone is another standout feature, allowing you to select one of the brand’s hues — including Cloud Dancer, the 2026 Pantone Color of the Year.

Along with their certification for low-emission, nontoxic products, the company has continually focused on making a positive environmental impact, too. As of May 2026, the company reported that they’ve donated more than $400,000 since 2021 to support reforestation in North America with the nonprofit organization One Tree Planted.

Recycled materials

Best For | A variety of options

West Elm has an extensive lineup of third-party certifications from Fair Trade USA, FSC, and GREENGUARD Gold. These provide you with peace of mind, knowing that each item is made to better your home and the planet. This isn’t always guaranteed by such a major retailer, which is why West Elm provides the best of both worlds. There are some in-stock items available, but most are customizable with dozens of upholsteries to choose from. Plus, there are so many different styles of barrel swivel chairs. The Cozy Swivel Chair, which starts at just $579, is a bestseller, and the Laurent Swivel Chair-and-a-Half is a larger, lower-profile style for an ultra-modern home.

Even though their pricing is more budget-friendly than others on this list, their partnership with Affirm lets you make interest-free payments on items you love but don’t want to pay in full.

Budget friendly
FSC

Greenguard certified
Natural materials

Best For | Heirloom-quality designs
Materials | Engineered wood, high-density foam, polyester
Price starting at | $899

After operating for more than 70 years, Pottery Barn has truly honed their craft. A sister company of West Elm, Pottery Barn is a Williams-Sonoma, Inc. company with plenty of certifications. Fair Trade and GREENGUARD Gold certified are most applicable for their swivel chairs, like the Remmy. The classic barrel chair is offered in two sizes (32 or 39 inches wide), and many colorways are currently in stock. Depending on your interior design, there’s also a leather upholstered model available.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. companies also have the luxury of free design services. When you sign up, a member of the Design Crew will meet with you — virtually, in-store, or in your own home — to discuss any home project for one hour. This can give customers much-needed insights at no charge, which is a major plus to factor in while budgeting.
