We’ve spent years researching and testing the best nontoxic mattresses and beds for ourselves and our families. These are our picks for Montessori beds made of natural and organic materials.

When you’re a parent, there are near-constant conversations about the many methods and philosophies telling you the “right” way to raise your child. And while there’s no one-size-fits-all recipe, parents have spent more than a century recommending one in particular: Montessori.

Montessori is an educational philosophy founded by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first female physician in Italy. “Montessori education focuses on the whole child, fostering rigorous, self-motivated growth in all areas of development—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical,” according to the American Montessori Society website. With these principles in mind, a Montessori bed is designed to be low to the ground and easy for toddlers to go in and out of independently.

We searched high and low for these low-profile beds, poring over hundreds of five-star reviews about the best Montessori beds. We also ensured these pieces were made with nontoxic materials like solid wood and VOC-free finishes to prevent your family from overexposure to harsh chemicals. Below, discover why they’re so beloved (and how to choose the best one for your little one).

What should you look for in a Montessori bed?

Beyond selecting a bed frame that rests flush against the floor, we found a number of “nice-to-haves” and important certifications to consider during the shopping process. These include:

Functionality: Some of our favorite Montessori-style beds serve the key function of making it easy to go on and off, even as a growing toddler. Others developed modular designs, so you can convert them into daybeds or traditional twin- or full-size beds as your little one grows.

Age-appropriate transition: Toddlers typically move into a bed between 18 months and 3 years, according to the Cleveland Clinic. There are some obvious signs, such as escaping or simply outgrowing the size of the crib, but oftentimes parents need to decide the appropriate moment for their child. If you move your child within the recommended age range, parents feel more secure knowing a Montessori bed is designed for toddlers to climb in and out safely. That said, you’ll still need to childproof the room, and it’s best to use a baby monitor to keep an eye on your toddler overnight.

Bonus features: There are a few toddler beds that offer extra benefits, like storage or a more whimsical design. For example, the Avery bed from Pottery Barn has a bookshelf attached for more storage, and the Rizo bed from Babyletto has a sweet wave-like shape on the railing.

There were several certifications we looked for as well. Many companies only use sustainably sourced wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, or FSC; and most products are Greenguard Gold certified, meaning they’ve been tested for more than 10,000 chemicals and 360 VOCs. For baby and toddler products, it’s also important to see if your favorite products have been third-party tested to meet or exceed standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to verify you’re providing your child with the safest, most health-conscious sleep environment.

Nestig was born in 2020, and founded by two parents aspiring to create luxury children’s furniture and decor meeting rigorous safety and sustainability standards. And it should come as no surprise that many of the qualities our editors love about the Wave crib are available in toddler bed form. In fact, several parents whose children outgrow the crib often purchase the Wave Kid bed. Made with FSC-certified solid Brazilian pine frame with nontoxic glue and paint finishes, Nestig’s furniture provides peace of mind from birth through toddlerhood—and beyond, thanks to the versatile twin size. And when you’re ready to elevate, attach the longer legs included to move the frame off the ground. Three colorways are offered to match your vision: natural wood, walnut, or Grove (a neutral green hue).

As part of their commitment to sustainability, Nestig says all of their products are handmade to order in a family-owned, low-waste factory located in Brazil. This keeps their inventory low, and requires longer processing times, but many parents think it’s well worth it.

Customer Review | “My little loves this bed! She went through a really tough separation anxiety/sleep regression phase at 18 months and we were really struggling until we got this bed. We were able to lay with her while she fell asleep, but she also felt independent with being the open side and the safety of the added twin bed rail. We had the Wave convertible crib before this and are in love with the quality of Nestig products.” – Unknown (Read more reviews.)
