We’ve lounged on nontoxic sofas and beds for years — these are our favorite daybeds that are sustainably made with natural fabrics and are built to last, too.

For the perfect does-everything piece of furniture for sitting, lounging, sleeping, or decoration, don’t sleep on daybeds. Or maybe do.

Whether you’re furnishing a new home or making some upgrades to your current interior design, a daybed might be just what you’re looking for to finish a space. Maybe you need seating in front of a window that won’t block the view, or you want an extra space to host overnight guests that doubles as another seating option in your living space.

That’s why we’ve rounded up some of our favorite sustainably-made daybeds on the market. Most of the below options are handcrafted and made of materials like solid wood and recycled filling and fabrics. They’re all built to last — and, most importantly, they all have eye-catching, tasteful design.

What should you consider when shopping for a daybed?

The furniture industry is rife with waste, unsustainable forestry practices, and excessive greenhouse gases, so we’re especially choosy about buying furniture from brands with sustainable practices like upcycling materials and ethically sourcing their wood. Investing in pieces handcrafted of natural materials is a little pricier — but you’ll come out on top in the long run when these pieces you buy now last you a lifetime.

And when it comes to furniture that folks will be sleeping on, we’re even more picky, looking for only natural materials whenever possible. “Repeated exposure to harmful chemicals in some traditional mattresses can impact your health, starting with how well you sleep,” Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino previously told TGT. “Some of these chemicals can contribute to symptoms including skin and respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, effects on your nervous system, and even impaired immune function.”

When daybed shopping, along with solid wood and natural fabrics, we like to look for third-party certifications like FSC to ensure wood was sustainably sourced, or Greenguard Gold to ensure the absence of VOCs. We also keep our eyes open for products made in the US and those that say they’re free of PFAS — which lots of stain-resistant fabrics can have.

Our criteria:

Our editors have lived with and researched the top sustainable furniture brands for over a decade. For this list, we’ve chosen our favorite daybeds made with safe, sustainable materials and manufacturing processes that will last for generations to come. We often revisit this guide to add new picks when they meet the criteria below.

  • SUSTAINABLE/ECO-FRIENDLY | Made with natural, organic, recycled, and responsibly sourced materials, these daybeds are low-impact and better for both our indoor environment and our planet. The materials and thoughtful production practices mean our choices are also durable and will maintain their integrity for years.
  • NONTOXIC/ORGANIC | We’ve chosen daybeds that have certifications ensuring they use safe materials and no harsh chemicals are applied in the process. None of the options on this list contain flame retardants, and all are free from PFAS, VOCs, and fiberglass.
  • COMFORT | Not only will you be lounging on this daybed, you or your guests will be sleeping on it too. We’ve chosen brands that have a track record for making comfortable and supportive furniture and beds so you can sleep soundly.
  • AFFORDABLE | We know that furniture is a big investment. Fortunately, some sustainable and clean furniture brands offer beautiful, functional pieces at a lower price point. We’ve tried to prioritize some of them on this list.
